Geopolitics, Energy Security, and Thailand’s Strategic Energy Transition
Thailand: Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East in early 2026, particularly following the intensification of regional conflict on 28 February 2026, have renewed global concern over the stability of critical energy supply routes. As of 11 March 2026, the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, has been effectively closed, creating a significant stress test for global energy markets. Located between Oman and Iran, the strait functions as the primary export route for crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Persian Gulf to international markets. Although geographically narrow, it carries approximately 20% of global oil supply and a substantial share of LNG exports. Any sustained disruption to this passage therefore has immediate implications for global energy prices, supply security, trade flows, and macroeconomic stability.
